AREA RACERS TAKE HOME SPORTSMAN TROPHIES AT DIVISION V HEARTLAND SPRING SHOOTOUT
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 7, 2006) - Local racers Matt Driskell and Tim Ekart fared very well Sunday, taking home coveted NHRA "Wally" trophies for winning their respective classes at the Lucas Oil NHRA Division V Heartland Spring Shootout presented by Goodyear at Heartland Park Topeka.
Driskell, a Wellsville, Kan. resident who completed work on his new 2006 Forrester Super Comp dragster only hours before Friday's first qualifying session, qualified second in the category and faced off with number one qualifier Dean Dubbin (Royalton, Minn.) in the finals. Driskell ran to an elapsed time of 7.659 seconds on his dial-in of 7.07 and broke out, but it didn't matter because Dubbin left early.
Manhattan, Kan. resident Tim Ekart outlasted a field of nearly 100 cars in the Super Comp category. Racing against the NHRA class index of 8.90 seconds, Ekart was perfect in the final, going 8.902 seconds at 171.64 MPH. Ekart's opponent, Dave Slatten (Fort Collins, Colo.) broke out in the final, going 8.888 seconds at 175.34 MPH.
