BAYTOWN, Texas - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells had another tough loss at this weekend's Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions at Houston Raceway Park. Wells lost on a holeshot to James Thompson Jr., who had a near perfect .408 reaction time (.400 is perfect), and Wells' elapsed time of 5.551 at 258.22 mph just wasn't enough to catch Thompson's 5.587 at 254.81.
Wells, of LeMars, Iowa, qualified No. 4 in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" entry with a strong elapsed time of 5.468 at 259.91 miles per hour before falling to Thompson in round one.
"He got me on the tree, ran a pretty good number, and just got me," said Wells. "It just fell off because it was a little hotter, and we didn't want to get too aggressive and overpower the track like we did at Memphis."
Wells will move back up the road to the Texas Motorplex for the resumption of the O'Reilly Nationals that was rained out last weekend. Wells hopes his fortunes take a turn for the better.
"We're just going to head back to Dallas and see if we can get back after it again," Wells said.
