BAYTOWN, Tex. (April 15, 2000) - Pro Stock Truck qualifying was completed today for the 13th annual O'Reilly Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Rick Jones will start Sunday eliminations from the No. 7 position in the County Motors Trailer Sales GMC Sonoma with yesterday's run of 7.551 seconds at 178.00 mph, while John Lingenfelter hangs on to take the No. 14 qualifying spot at 7.567 seconds at 177.81 mph in the Summit Racing GMC Sonoma. David Spitzer's Sunnen/Dynagear Sonoma misses one of the quickest Pro Stock Truck fields in NHRA history. Spitzer runs 7.597 seconds at 176.77 mph, less than three-hundredth's of a second off the 16th and final starting spot. The No. 1 qualifier was Bob Panella in an S-10 with an elapsed time of 7.494 seconds at 179.21 mph. Randy Daniels is qualified second in an S-10 and becomes the first Pro Stock Truck driver to crack the 180 mph barrier. Daniels ran 7.501 seconds at a national-record speed of 180.02 mph. Greg Stanfield is qualified third, Steve Johns is fourth and Brian Self is fifth.

PRO STOCK TRUCK

Rick Jones (Country Motors Trailer Sales GMC Sonoma) - "We're No. 7 going into the final session, we're running consistent and we're competitive in an extremely strong field. There are a lot of good trucks on the outside looking in so the fact that the Country Motors Trailer Sales Sonoma is even qualified is a reason to be smiling. Our last run this morning wasn't so hot. We ran two 7.55 e.t.s yesterday and then today we went into test mode. We made quite a few changes on our Pro Stock GMC that we thought would make it better, but obviously it wasn't. A 7.58 was decent but not where we want to be. We're going back to where we were yesterday and we should be all right. Depending on the air we may be able to step up. It just depends how late the session goes. As it is right now, the air isn't good enough to improve. There might be a little shuffling around, but our goal is to get ready for tomorrow. If we can keep lane choice, remain in the top half and do a good job from a driving standpoint, then we have a chance."

John Lingenfelter (Summit Racing GMC Sonoma) - "We started out great. On the first run yesterday the Summit Racing Sonoma had real good 60 and 330-foot times, and then at the eighth mile we dropped a valve and broke the motor. That's two motors in two weeks although the first one last week in Las Vegas wasn't that serious, this one was serious. The first one was just a stuck ring - this one dropped a valve and ate everything up. We had a decent shot yesterday afternoon but we're looking forward to getting back in the left lane tonight. We think it's slightly quicker, but our main concern now is to stay in the program. We're one of the last trucks out - the last two trucks are GMC Sonomas. For us, we felt that the first session had the potential of being the best, but we should be late enough tonight to step it up - the conditions will be close to last night's session. If you look at how close the field is, anybody that qualifies has a chance of winning tomorrow. A little over six-hundredth's of a second separates the field from No. 1 to 16.

We're making consistent runs, we're not in left field on anything, and if we can stay in the program we may be able to do some damage."
