BAYTOWN, Texas, Oct. 23, 2000 - The 2000 NHRA season's conclusion has now been condensed into three successive weeks, beginning with the Matco Tools SuperNationals this weekend at Houston Raceway Park.

Doug Herbert and his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster didn't get an opportunity to make one qualifying run at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis last weekend, thanks to intermittent rain that forced postponement of the O'Reilly Fall Nationals to Nov. 3-4. So the team is really ready to go at HRP.

"We've run well the last few times we've been to Houston," said Herbert, who won the spring event at the track last year and went to the semifinals in the tour's first 2000 stop here in April.

"I think our car will run better this time," he added. "We'll see what happens. We worked on the clutch and cylinder heads before going to Dallas and didn't get a chance to run. We could run better than we have all year. We need to qualify well and win some rounds."

Herbert is ninth in points with 807, 66 behind Bob Vandergriff Jr., and he's holding down the eighth and final position in the special Budweiser Shootout Top Fuel event which will be run Nov. 11 at Pomona, Calif., during the Automobile Club Finals (Nov. 9-12). The Shootout drivers will be competing for a $100,000 first-place check.

Top Fuel drivers earn qualifying points at each race prior to the Finals. Herbert has 2375, 90 ahead of Don Lampus, with just this event and the completion of the Fall Nationals remaining to collect points.

What did Herbert do with last Sunday off? He went water skiing and, as things turned out, thought he might've been better off staying in Dallas. He took a hard spill during an outing on Lake Norman and broke an eardrum. "It was a good thing I had a life jacket on because I didn't know which end was up after the crash," he commented. "I'll be OK by the time I get to Baytown."
