Angelle opens in the No. 1 position in Indy.

Qualifying for the biggest race of the 2002 NHRA POWERade season got underway today as the professionals took to the track at the 48th annual U.S. Nationals. Friday's solitary run would take on added significance for eight Pro Stock Motorcycle riders, as it would be the only official run before Saturday's K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash.

Angelle Savoie and the Star Racing team will enter the high-speed, high-dollar shootout as the top seed, and their first attempt at Indianapolis Raceway Park proved they are more than ready, as their 7.228, 184.04 mph effort placed them atop the field following the first of five qualifying sessions

"Naturally, you're always pleased when you're number one, but after seeing the Pro Stock Cars run, we know we have some work to do. We should be able to run within three hundredths of the cars, which, considering their quickest pass tonight was a 6.84, means we should have gone 7.14. Instead, we ran a 7.22, Matt went 7.26 and everyone else was in the thirties, so we were all off a little bit.

"The extra qualifying session and the Pro Bike Klash means we torture our engines more than usual. Fortunately, George (team owner Bryce) is very careful of how many runs we have on each engine, and already has a plan in place to replace the one in our Star Racing Suzuki during the weekend. It's good to start out on top, we just have to make sure to keep ourselves there."
