The weekend was off to a great start as the Advance Team opened with a 4.85 e.t. at a speed of 304.67 mph on Friday evening. Saturday's season record low e.t. at a speed of 313.07 mph provided the team with much confidence as they took the number three qualifying spot.
During Sunday's second session, the Advance Team unfortunately suffered a split fuel tank, causing a fire and damage to many parts. The Advance crew was faced with working well into the night getting ready for Monday's match.
After recovering from Sunday's fuel fire, the Advance Team managed to gain the winning light over Dale Creasy Jr. during the first round of eliminations. Cruz's elapsed time of 4.99(e.t.) at a speed of 298.60 mph beat Creasy's 5.009 e.t./309.49 mph. During the second round, Pedregon faced Gary Densham. Although Cruz suffered a huge explosion at half track, the Advance team managed to take the win as the car remained on fire through the lights. Pedregon, with a 5.89 e.t. to Densham's 5.95 e.t., took the win by less than a car length, with a margin of victory of 0.0439 seconds.
Once again, the Advance Auto Parts Racing Team pulled together to make sure the car was ready to go for the semi-final round against John Force. Although Pedregon had a better reaction time than John Force (.478 to a .590), Force pulled ahead of the Advance Team, claming the victory over Cruz.
"This event was a turning point for us in many respects-namely the clutch system," said Pedregon. "We still need to do a little more work on the fuel system and a few other things, but we are very excited about our performance and are ready to go out there and do it all over again at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, in Reading, PA."
