INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 1) - After the first day of action at the 46th Annual NHRA U.S. Nationals, Larry Dixon was able to qualify the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster in the No. 4 position with a time of 4.668 seconds at 309.20 mph and all but guarantee he would improve on his D.N.Q. finish last season at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

In the only top fuel qualifying session of the day, Dixon looked to take advantage of the only night session of the weekend and put up solid numbers that would see him included in the 16-car field for Monday's elimination round.

Dixon navigated the Miller Lite/Raybestos Dragster, which was sporting a new paint scheme similar to the one teammate Rusty Wallace adorned during his ninth career win NASCAR at Bristol one week ago, to a time of 4.668 seconds at 309.20 mph. His qualifying time bettered Kenny Bernstein's effort of 4.697 seconds at 314.46 mph, who was running opposite Dixon.

"If I were going to critique the run, I would say that it was lazy at the top end," said Dixon. "We set the car up tonight to ensure that we would get down the track. That was our major obstacle that we wanted to overcome today. Tonight's session will be the best of the weekend. Last year we were not able to get down the track at night and it cost us. I am a bit greedy, though. I would have liked to have got a little more out of the car. On the other side of things, we got the run in and we know that we will be racing on Monday no matter what happens the rest of the weekend."

Saturday's two qualifying sessions and are scheduled to be run at Noon and 4 PM CT. Sunday's qualifying laps will be run at 12:15 and 4 PM, with Monday's elimination round beginning at 11 AM. All action this weekend will be televised by TNN.
