During Friday's single qualifying session for the U.S. Nationals, Whit Bazemore battled to find traction on the Indianapolis Raceway Park surface. Following repeated efforts to avoid smoking the tires, Bazemore was finally forced to shut of early, coasting to an elapsed time of 7.566 seconds with a top speed of 106.14 mph, which found the Kendall Motor Oil/Matco Tools Camaro Z28 outside the top sixteen. Naturally, Bazemore looked to improve on this initial effort during one of Saturday's two time trials.
"We had it set-up fairly conservatively, but it still went out and smoked the tires, which happened to a lot of cars. In our case, we're trying to get the right tune-up for this Kendall/Matco Camaro. We know it's a rocket ship, it's just a matter of getting it right. We have to keep chipping away, which is precisely what Terry (crew chief Manzer) and the crew are working to do. This Etchells Racing Team knows how to run a good car and win races. We've proven that. Right now, we have to find the right combination for this Raceway Park track. We may be struggling right now, but we'll get there."
