CLERMONT - Friday Recap
by Larry Sullivan CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - The first day of qualifying for the 44th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals found Cory McClenathan, Ron Capps, Warren Johnson, John Smith, and Larry Kopp atop the ladders for their respective Professional categories. McClenathan was one of three drivers to post a 4.61 second elapsed time in the first round of Top Fuel qualifying, McClenathan's 4.614 at 315.56 mph quicker than Larry Dixon's 4.615 at 317.01 and David Grubnic's 4.617 at 311.74. Capps posted a 5.023 second elapsed time at 302.21 mph, the only Funny Car to break into 300 mph territory in the first qualifying session Friday night. Randy Anderson and John Force both posted 5.06 second elapsed times to fall in behind Capps on the ladder. The Pro Stock ladder is a Johnson and Johnson affair, Warren Johnson quickest with a track record elapsed time of 6.977 seconds and a track record speed of 197.62 mph. His son Kurt was not far behind at 6.989 and 196.50. Jim Yates and Jeg Coughlin also broke into the sixes on their first attempt. In Pro Stock Bike, John Smith surprised everyone by outqualifying Matt Hines and Angelle Seeling, and Greg Underdahl added to the surprise by slipping in between Hines and Seeling. Smith's 7.407 at 176.99 mph bettered Hines' 7.409 at 178.53, Hines having some handling problems on his first run. Underdahl slipped into third with a 7.439, bettering Seeling's 7.461. In Pro Stock Truck, two more rounds of qualifying Friday left the top three qualifiers unchanged, Kopp on the pole with an improved 7.721 at 173.64 mph over Jerry Haas' also improved 7.741. David Nickens held on to the third spot at 7.772. Four more rounds of qualifying (two more for the trucks) Saturday and Sunday (Saturday for the trucks) will set the fields for Monday's eliminations (Sunday for the trucks).
