Dixon sits no. 2 after second day of qualifying at 49th Annual Mac Tools u.s nationals
CLERMONT, IND. (AUG. 30) -- Defending POWERade NHRA champion Larry Dixon sits No.2 headed into tomorrow's third day of qualifying at the 49th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Dixon drove his Miller Lite/ Snake Racing dragster to a 4.537-second run at 319.29 mph under the lights at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
The Snake Racing top fuel pilot covered the quarter-mile in 4.655 seconds (315.86 mph) in the early session but would record the second best run of the day five hours later during the evening qualifying session. Dixon a resident of nearby Avon Indiana drove his Miller Lite dragster to 4.537-lap time at a speed of 319.26 mph.
The winner of eight NHRA National events out of 16 final rounds in 2003, Dixon wants to add another U.S. Nationals title (1995 and 2001) to his win column for his Dick LaHaie led team.
"It didn't run on eight cylinders and it only ran 319 mph," said a displeased Dick LaHaie. "This thing will run 319 (mph) down a gravel road. We missed the last second and a half but everything else was perfect.
I guess we get a little hard on ourselves because we expect to do good every time but No. 2 is ok. It all goes back to I guess we're never satisfied with what we do, which is probably what makes us successful."
"They came back on the second run and ran well in a night session," said team owner and seven time U.S. Nationals champion Don "The Snake" Prudhomme (TF-1969-70; FC 1973-74-77-89). "They really stepped up to the plate. It's like we needed to hit a run and he knocked it out of the park. In a field of 24 being the second quickest, hell that's good. Good thing about this car, it'll run good at night and during the day with the heat," said Prudhomme.
LaHaie and the Snake Racing team will go head to head with the afternoon heat during tomorrow's first session of qualifying beginning at 12:45 PM (ET) followed by the second session at 4:10 PM (ET). Beginning at noon Dixon's Snake Racing teammates Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson will compete in the funny car $100,000 shootout. Last year, Ron Capps won his third career $100,000 Shootout when he defeated Dean Skuza in the final.
Watch ESPN Sunday for early round qualifying coverage from 1:00-3:00 PM (ET) with qualifying coverage concluding on ESPN2 at 9:30 PM -- 12:30 AM (ET).
