CLERMONT IN - SUMMIT FastNews - Matt Hines was the big winner Saturday at the 45th annual U.S. Nationals. Hines defeated arch-rival Angelle Seeling in the Holley Pro Stock Bike Dominator Duel to take the $15,000 prize and set himself up for a $10,000 bonus if he can also win the U.S. Nationals Monday. In the Duel final round Hines posted a 7.286 second elapsed time at 182.85 mph to Seeling's 7.343 at 180.12. After breaking most of the existing track records in the opening Friday night qualifying session, competitors in the 45th annual U.S. Nationals came back to Earth Saturday when they tried to duplicate those runs in the hot, sticky weather of a summer afternoon in the Midwest. None of the top spots on the eliminations ladders changed in any way - the best Friday-night runs could not be duplicated in the heat and humidity Saturday. Joe Amato continues to head the Top Fuel field with his opening round 4.529 at 324.20. However, the field tightened considerably Saturday, with Bruce Litton now on the sixteenth spot with a 4.770 at 306.46 and only four dragsters slower than 4.699. In Funny Car, Tommy Johnson Jr.'s 4.885 at 315.71 mph continues to lead the way, but as with the dragsters, the rest of the field tightened during the two runs today. There are now seven cars in the fours and the bump spot is Phil Burkart's 5.132. In Pro Stock, Warren Johnson continues atop the ladder with his 6.920 at 196.67, but in the first session Saturday WJ raised the track speed record to 199.82 mph. As with the other Pro categories, the Pro Stock bump spot improved considerably during the two Saturday sessions, Steve Schmidt now on the bubble at 7.001 seconds. WJ hurt his favorite engine on the Friday night run and flew back to Georgia to repair the damaged head and pick up a couple of replacement parts. He will be back in time to run again Sunday. In Pro Stock Motorcycles, where Hines and Seeling lead the way, the bump is now Joe DeSantis' 7.570. In Pro Stock Truck, which completed qualifying today, Mark Osborne's 7.623 was good enough to retain the top spot on the ladder, while Todd Patterson ended up in the sixteenth spot at 7.671. During the final qualifying session, in the heat of the afternoon, only one truck, Mike Coughlin, ran quicker than Patterson's bump time, with most a tenth of a second off their earlier pace. The trucks will open eliminations Sunday, with two rounds, then will finish Sunday afternoon. The remaining categories will have two more rounds of qualifying Sunday, including the Big Bud Shootout at Indy for the Funny Cars, and will start eliminations Monday.
