The Pro Stock class will begin elimination rounds for the 45th Annual US Nationals tomorrow. The legends of NHRA Drag Racing consider a win at the US National to be among the most important accomplishments in their careers. Drivers like Bob Glidden and the late Lee Shepherd are all past winners in NHRA's most competitive competition class. The Coughlin brother's would like nothing more then to add their names to the list of the elite driver's who have won the US Nationals.

Jeg Coughlin began his final day of qualifying securely holding down the number five spot and Troy was in the seventh spot on the outside looking in. In the fourth session the track was heating up from the sun beating down on, which creates traction problems for the 1300 horsepower "factory hot rods."

The #2 yellow and black JEG'S Mail Order machine driven by '98 NHRA "Rookie of the Year" Jeg Coughlin continued to show the teams strength in the heat. The car blasted down the left lane and posted an impressive 7.003 @ 197.59 mph run, which was the second quickest and third fastest of the session.

Jeg said, "The team really has a great handle on the setup for the hot conditions that we are all dealing with."

Troy Coughlin's problem has been getting to the 60' foot clock. The car has just not been responding well to the track. In the fourth session the problems continued. Troy ran a 7.058 @ 196.90 mph, the ET was seventeenth and the Mph was seventh for the session.

Troy noted, "We made some big changes going into the final session, it was either going to work or not." The team has replaced the coil, ignition, headers, carburetors and the team has made some chassis adjustments for the final session.

A couple of oil downs by the Fuel cars really worked to the benefit of the Pro Stock class. As the sun went down the air quickly got better and Troy was at the back of the pack.

Jeg was the first of the JEG'S Mail Order cars to go down the track. He blasted off of the starting line and followed the groove all the way to the finishline. Jeg posts a very impressive 6.99 @ 196.96 mph in the right lane.

Jeg commented, "Our team is prepared for tomorrow. The setup that we have been working with all weekend is really working well." Jeg remained in the number five position and will face George Marnell in the first round tomorrow, Coughlin will have lane choice.

Troy watched from his younger brother's run from the inside of his #24 JEG'S Mail Order Olds Cutlass knowing that he was one of a select few cars that had a legitimate chance to make the field. Troy said, "Seeing the numbers that Jeg put up on the board got me even more pumped up for the run."

Troy was in the left lane, which is considered to be the better of the two lanes. The JEG'S Mail Order car left the starting line and took off like a rocket. The car followed the groove, but slowly favored the left side as the car went down the track. The timing board read 6.99 @ 197.22 mph and Troy was in. He moved into the number fourteen position and will face Greg Anderson.

Troy said, "Not being in the field and having one more chance isn't my favorite position to be in. However, the team that my father has put together is full of specialist that work together as a team. That's why I will be racing in the 1999 US Nationals."

The familiar yellow and black JEG'S colors will once again be on opposite sides of the Pro Stock ladder. Jeg Coughlin, Sr said, "Having my two son's meet in the final round at the US Nationals would be among the most special feelings I have ever felt." Both Coughlin brother's are past US National winner's. Troy won Super Gas in '91 and Jeg was the winner in Super Gas '92.
