DIXON QUALIFIES MILLER LITE DRAGSTER SIXTH AT INDY

CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 3, 2005) Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 6 qualifying position Sunday at Indianapolis Raceway Park after using a tune-up from crew chief Dick LaHaie to recorded a qualifying-best effort of 4.510 seconds.

Dixon's best run of the five qualifying attempts came Saturday evening under the lights at I.R.P. when he blistered the historic quarter mile in 4.510 seconds at 324.83 mph to claim the sixth qualifying position. The 4.510-effort was the quickest pass Dixon has ever recorded at the U.S. Nationals.

The Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster posted solid early incremental numbers on Saturday's first pass before overpowering the I.R.P. quarter mile as Dixon coasted to a run of 5.379 seconds at 177.49 mph. The 37-time NHRA winner then raced the Miller-backed rail to a pass of 4.633 at 317.72 to conclude qualifying at the prestigious event. Dixon's engine dropped a cylinder on the final qualifying pass. This marks the fifth time that Dixon has qualified his rail in the No. 6 position this season.

"It was a strong field here this weekend," Dixon said. "We ran a 4.51 and ended up sixth. Performance-wise, today wasn't a great day. We spun the tires on the first run and then ran on seven cylinders on the second pass. I would assume that Dick LaHaie and the team will make the necessary adjustments so that we don't have the same problems on Monday."

Dixon and the Miller gang will face off against No. 11 qualifier Scott Weis in round one of Top Fuel eliminations on Monday at I.R.P. Dixon, a two-time U.S. Nationals winner (1995, 2001), has a 9-2 career record versus Weis.
