JOHNSON JR. MAKES SECOND QUICKEST RUN OF CAREER, OPENS QUALIFYING AT INDY IN NO. 2 POSITION
CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 2, 2005) - Tommy Johnson Jr. blasted his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the second quickest pass of his career Friday at Indianapolis Raceway Park as the veteran driver opened qualifying at the! 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals with a 4.748-second elapsed time.
Under the lights at the storied multipurpose racing facility, the Iowa native used a tune-up from crew chiefs Mike Green and Johnny West to power his Skoal Racing Monte Carlo to the 4.748 second, 325.77 mph effort placing Johnson second in the flopper order with four qualifying sessions remaining. Johnson posted the second quickest (4.747 - Robert Hight) and fastest (Del Worsham - 328.14) run of the first qualifying round. There are 25 Funny Cars attempting to make the 16-car field at the U.S. Nationals.
"That was the most nervous that I've been all season before that run," Johnson said. "Indy is such a big race and you've got to take advantage of the two night sessions to get in the show. To run a 4.74 right out of the box changes your entire outlook on the weekend. Now, we can go after it since we're ahead of the game. Tomorrow night, we can go after low E.T. The car nosed over at the finish line, so there's more left it in it."
The Skoal Racing crew looks to claim the top qualifying position when qualifying continues with sessions scheduled for 3 and 7:30 p.m. at I.R.P. Johnson has qualified No. 1 at the U.S. Nationals twice in his career (1999, '00).
