SCHUMACHER, SIX OTHERS WIN AT US NATIONALS ON GOODYEARS
CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 3, 2007) -- Tony Schumacher led a group of seven drivers who won their category while racing on Goodyear tires in the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals National Hot Rod Association race at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis today.
Goodyear's seven wins in 14 categories led all tiremakers and came on both bias-ply and radial tires and in both professional and sportsman competition.
Goodyear's other winners included Mike Ashley (in Funny Car), Dave Connolly (Pro Stock), Jason Coan (Competition Eliminator), Brandon Wilkinson (Super Stock), Peter Biondo (Stock Eliminator) and Boris Rojas (Pro Rear Wheel Drive). Jack Beckman won the Skoal Showdown, a special race within a race for Funny Cars.
Schumacher's sixth victory on drag racing's biggest stage placed him firmly among the most accomplished drivers in the history of the sport and the six wins have all come in the last eight years. His victory in this year's final round came at the expense of Larry Dixon and it tied Schumacher with Dixon on the career win list. Both drivers have 40 victories.
"You think it's going to end," Schumacher said of his success in the US Nationals. "It's got to end. I wish I could sell it and make a ton of money. We don't know why we win here."
The racing conditions were difficult, if normal, for the Labor Day Weekend classic. The track temperatures reached above 130 degrees on the final day, making traction hard to find.
"We went down the track every time, no problem," Ashley said. The victory was Ashley's third of the season.
Connolly said his final round run was the hardest pass of the day. "We shook the tires a little bit," he said. "That was the toughest run we had."
Goodyear's win streak in Pro Stock, which dates back to 1992, has now reached 330 races.
The race at Indianapolis was the first of the NHRA's new Countdown to the Championship and the results changed the standings in the professional categories. Schumacher jumped to first in Top Fuel, trailed by Dixon. Robert Hight leads Ashley in Funny Car and Connolly leads defending champ Greg Anderson.
