Meyer makes it two in a row in Atlanta

COMMERCE, Ga. - NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Jay Meyer kept his record a perfect 7-0 this year at Atlanta Dragway during this past weekend's NHRA Division 2 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event there. Meyer dominated the event, qualifying No. 1 and working his way to the finals where he defeated the defending Division 2 Champion, Michael Gunderson.

Meyer, from Freeport, Texas, qualified his Blown Alcohol Dragster No. 1 with a 5.528 second pass at 252.85 mph. In round one, he received a bye when No. 8 qualifier Cherissa Griffis couldn't make the call, and ran a 5.576 at 243.28 mph, but lost lane choice to Jason Cannon in the semifinals. In a close race, Meyer cut a .418 light (.400 is perfect), and never looked back, running a 5.528 at 254.28 to Cannon's right-there 5.545 at 255.73. Meyer then took out Gunderson in the finals, running a 5.565 at 254.28 mph to Gunderson's 5.689 at 243.28 mph to win his seventh straight round at Atlanta Dragway this year.

"We just tried to take it one round at a time," said Meyer. "It's kind of like my crewmember Stu [Herbst] says, it's like eating an elephant, you got to take it one bite at a time. We just worked on our race setup. We were fortunate enough to get a couple of good runs in qualifying and qualified No. 1. Cannon went out there in the first round and ran quicker than us and took lane choice for the semifinals. The track came around, and we didn't have enough clutch in it, and it drove right through it. It really didn't make any difference, the lanes were pretty even. We're gonna have to watch that kid. He's coming around and getting pretty good. We was able to squeak one by them though"

Coming into this race, Meyer had stated that his team was 'just racing for fun.' With his win in Atlanta, Meyer, the defending Division 4 Champion, has once again put himself in the running for the Federal Mogul World Championship.

"Man, does this win change everything," stated Meyer. "Now we have to go back to worrying about points, and everything associated with it. It puts the pressure back on you again. Now if we go to Scribner [Nebraska], and win that one, and win Noble [Oklahoma], if we get lucky enough to, that would give us four divisional wins and a semifinal loss. We have three national event wins, and the way things have been going, we have a pretty good shot at winning two more of those. So basically, we're still in the hunt. We just have to keep going."
