LAS VEGAS, NV- There's an old saying that mandates that sometimes the spirit is willing but the flesh is week. In the case of NHRA/Winston Pro Stock driver Jerry Haas, he's got his own saying. The veteran chassis builder from Fenton, Mo., has added another twist by saying, "the spirit is willing, but the ride is even more determined."
Thus was a case as the multi-time award-winning chassis builder outreacted John Lingenfelter in the first round, and had no choice but to lift as his Chevrolet S-10 rattled the tires pretty hard.
The match was a renewal of the old rivalry that transpired as the two were once competitors against each other when the Pro Stock Truck division was still an exhibition category.
Haas was very impressive, nonetheless. He scored the third quickest lap in qualifying.
"I wanted a win real bad," explained Haas. "We made a judgement call in the combination and unfortunately for us, it wasn't the right one. I'm disappointed, but I'm excited that Mike Mahon will now give it a shot at Houston.
When asked how he thinks Mahon will perform at this weekend's O'Reilly Nationals in Houston, Tx., Haas smiled and uttered, "It's going to be a blast."
Indeed, it will be.
