Tireshake ends MCP Racing's season a few rounds early
POMONA, Calif. - Tireshake. It's been the enemy of a Funny Car since it's inception in the late 60's. Some forty plus years later, it's still around, and reared it's nasty head for NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners backed team during this past weekend's season-closing Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at the newly christened Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (formerly known as Pomona Raceway). In what proved to be one of the toughest fields of the year, 29 of the nation's top cars duked it out for 16 qualifying spots, resulting in one of the quickest fields ever, with a 5.767 second bump spot just to make the field.
Weaver, from Orting, Wash., put the Bob DeVour tuned MCP Camaro in the show in the ninth spot with a 5.668 at 253.80 mph. In his first round matchup with Ron August, the car experienced heavy tireshake off the launch, forcing Weaver to pedal the car, slowing to a 6.051 at 248.39 mph, while August had no such problems and took the win with a 5.723 at 253.18 mph.
"That's just drag racing," cited team Crew Chief DeVour. "We found some more horsepower, we just need to figure out how to get it to the ground better. It just takes runs down the track, and we need to make more. We'll do some testing over the offseason and get after it again next year."
"We hate to end the year like that," added Weaver. "But when you have 29 cars gunning for it, the field is so tough, you can't leave anything on the table, or make any mistakes. We missed that window, and we got beat. I feel like we are all getting better as a team every race, and I'm excited about coming back with these guys next year."
Team owner Ron Meer already has his cites on next season.
"We definitely would have liked to finish the year better," cited Meer. "But you have to look at the big picture. Relatively speaking, we're still a new team. New team or not, I think we had a good year, so being new, that makes it better. We'll look at the data from the last few races, and I'm confident we'll learn from it and improve. We plan to test over the offseason, and I think I speak for the team in saying we really look forward to having a good year next season."
