Angelle gains third consecutive No. 1 qualifying position with performance in Joliet.

On the strength of a 7.146-second run made during the Saturday morning qualifying session, Angelle Savoie captured the No. 1 qualifying position at the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Nationals in Joliet, IL. This marks the third consecutive event at which the CVEC Suzuki has completed qualifying at the top of the Pro Stock Motorcycle field.

Although their efforts on Friday had put them atop the field, the Star Racing team entered Saturday's twin time trials determined to improve, eliminating any miscues they may have made. As has been their custom, they responded to this personal challenge by recording the only elapsed times in their class under 7.20. Once qualifying was complete, they quickly turned their attention to Sunday's eliminations, which start with a first-round encounter with No. 16 qualifier Fred Camarena.

"We weren't happy with either of our runs yesterday. It bogged at the starting line, and even though the 7.21 was low, we knew we had a lot left.

"Today, it was great, shooting off the starting line with an incredible 1.06 60-foot time, and it went straight down the track. These bikes are very finicky and you have to keep them straight and hit your shift points just right. On both our runs today, we did just that.

"But our job is only halfway done. We've done well here in qualifying, and made it to the final round twice, but we have yet to win at Route 66 Raceway. That's our goal for tomorrow, and we definitely have the bike to do it.

"My CVEC Suzuki is built by Star Racing, which is an awesome team, both here and at the shop. They'll work fourteen to sixteen hour days to prepare my bike, which makes it so hard when we don't win on a driver error. I know they've given me the horsepower, so it's up to me to do it tomorrow."

Fast Facts:

- This is Angelle's 27th career No. 1 qualifying performance (and third of 2002) and second at Route 66 Raceway.

- Angelle has the quickest elapsed time in three of the four qualifying sessions.

- This is the 58th No. 1 for the Star Racing Team.

- Angelle will be looking to win from the No. 1 position for the twelfth time in her career, having last accomplished this feat at this year's Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals in Atlanta.

- Angelle has now qualified in the top half of the elimination ladder (eighth or better) at every one of the 81 races in which she has competed in her Pro Stock Motorcycle career.

- Angelle has not suffered a first-round setback since August 22, 1999 at Brainerd, Minn. That span of 38 races represents the longest current streak in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing, and is only two behind the all-time mark set by Bob Glidden.
