Millican and Team 104+ Performance Additives Qualify 11th at NHRA Route 66 Nationals
Team Hopes for First NHRA Win at Hometown Race
Joliet, Ill. - May 22, 2004 - Clay Millican of Team 104+ Performance Additives/Lehman Racing drove his Top Fuel dragster to the number 11 qualifying position for Sunday's finals at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. [04_headshot.jpg]
Millican's best run came in the first qualifying round on Saturday, where he clocked an elapsed time of 4.628 at 323.81 mph. Millican made his qualifying passes in front of a large crowd of hometown fans, as both Lehman Racing and 104+ Performance Additives, a product of Gold Eagle Company, are based in Chicago.
"I really appreciate all of the support of the Gold Eagle employees, especially since they came out to watch us in this rainy weather!" said Millican. "Getting qualified is the only way we can win our first NHRA race, and we made a step towards that by just getting in the show for tomorrow."
This race marks just the second time that the Lehman Racing team has competed in its hometown. The first time came in 1998, when the team raced in its first- ever NHRA Top Fuel race in the Chicago White Sox- sponsored dragster. That year, Team Owner Peter Lehman graduated from college at Northwestern University in nearby Evanston, and has since led the team to three consecutive IHRA Top Fuel Championships, while also racing a limited NHRA schedule. Millican will face number six qualifier Darrell Russell in the first round of eliminations on Sunday, which are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT. Millican has not faced Russell yet this season, and has a career won/lost record of 0-2 against him.
The 104+ Performance Additives/Lehman Racing Team hopes to get their first-ever NHRA Top Fuel victory on Sunday. They have advanced to the final round of eliminations in their past three NHRA races in Houston, Bristol, and Atlanta, and finished second every time. Over the course of those three races, Millican has advanced from 14th to 6th place in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points standings.
Millican has raced in just five of the seven NHRA national events thus far in 2004, and plans to compete in a total of eight to ten NHRA races this season, while going for a fourth consecutive IHRA Championship with Team Werner.
