Densham getting his groove back

BELLFLOWER, Calif. (June 9, 2005) -- Things have taken a decidedly upward turn in Gary Densham's Racebricks.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo Funny Car camp since the POWERade tour left Topeka, Kan., -- the last stop on the 23-race POWERade tour.

By adding Torco Race Fuels as a major associate sponsor just before the ninth race of the year, and then having a weekend off to spend some of his new sponsorship dollars, Densham has finally been able to stock his trailer with more of the parts it takes to compete at the highest level of drag racing.

"I'm doing my best to spend all of Evan's money," Densham said, referring to Torco owner Evan Knoll, who added Densham to his growing arsenal of drivers on May 24. "I've been able to buy a lot of new parts and even some back-up pieces to give us the stock we need to step on it when we the situation arises.

"Marty Yacoobian [CEO of Racebricks Collectables] brought us back from the edge and allowed us to race this year by becoming our major sponsor. We've been working as hard as we can to show him he made the right choice by backing our team. With the additional help we're now getting from Torco, plus the Auto Club's contributions, we're getting closer and closer to where we need to be to win every weekend. That would be the best gift I can think of to give Marty. That first Wally is going on his desk."

Densham is an eight-time winner on the NHRA tour and is the defending champion of the U.S. Nationals, drag racing's premier event. But he's still searching for his first victory of 2005, something he'd love to find at one of his favorite racetracks this weekend during the eighth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Chicago.

"This is a beautiful racetrack and it would be a great place to win," said Densham, who worked as a schoolteacher in Bellflower, Calif., for four decades while racing on the weekends before going full-time in the late 1990s. "If hard work and long hours won you the trophy, we'd have a shelf-full already. But every team out here is working hard and we all have the same goal. That's what makes it all so much fun."

The NHRA POWERade Series starts pro qualifying for the on Friday at 3:30 and 7 p.m. Qualifying continues Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. before final eliminations start at 11 a.m. Sunday.

ESPN2 will air coverage of this weekend's event starting with qualifying at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. Final eliminations will start at 3 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day can be seen at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday on ESPN2.
