GOODYEAR-EQUIPPED CARS WIN SIX TIMES IN NHRA EVENT
JOLIET, Ill. (June 10, 2007) -- Don Schumacher held his annual team party the night before the start of the 10th annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Route 66 Raceway here. Sunday they held another team party at the start of the final round Funny Car competition.
Schumacher Racing driver Gary Scelzi narrowly beat teammate Ron Capps in the final to win the Funny Car final. The victory capped a wild event, which impacted the standings in the professional categories and made the topsy-turvy 2007 season even harder to figure. Scelzi led a phalanx of six drivers using Goodyear tires into the winners' circle.
That total was the best among tiremakers. Goodyear's 34 victories in NHRA national event competition this season tops the tire industry.
Scelzi, Larry Dixon (in Top Fuel) and Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) were Goodyear's POWERade Racing Series professional winners. Bill Reichert (Top Alcohol Dragster), Brandon Wilkinson (Super Stock) and Brian Forrester (Super Gas) were Goodyear's Lucas Oil Racing Series sportsman winners.
Scelzi said of his boss, "Don had a good day, there's no doubt about it."
Scelzi's win was his 35th in the nitro classes and he was the first nitro driver to win after qualifying first.
Dixon's victory was his 39th and it came at the expense of Rod Fuller.
Coughlin won for the first time since the final race of the 2005 season. He raced part time in 2006 but has been fulltime on the POWERade Series this season. He beat defending Pro Stock champ Jason Line in the final, mostly due to his outstanding reaction time of .002 of a second.
Coughlin also won his 35th race and tied Scelzi and Don Garlits on the all-time victory list.
Line's teammate, Greg Anderson, set track records for elapsed time (6.617 seconds) and top speed (208.94) in Pro Stock during the Friday night qualifying session.
Kurt Johnson won the King Demon Crown special race for Pro Stock cars.
Spencer Massey won the Top Alcohol Dragster portion of the Jeg's All Star event for the Lucas Oil Sportsman classes. Massey drives for former driving star Gene Snow.
The event was as notable for the drivers that failed to qualify and the dramatic effect it had on the standings. Top Fuel stars Brandon Bernstein, David Grubnic and Whit Bazemore were on the sideline when eliminations started, as was Funny Car's Robert Hight.
The professional results changed the standings. Fuller took the Top Fuel lead from Bernstein, who fell to second place. Hight started the weekend a close second to Capps in the Funny Car standings and remained second, but the margin is now 140 points. Anderson retained his big lead in Pro Stock, but second-place Coughlin edged closer.
