CARQUEST Auto Parts on board with Carrier Boyz Racing and Cory Mac at Chicago

JOLIET, Ill. (September 29, 2004) -- CARQUEST Auto Parts once again joins Carrier Boyz Racing as an associate marketing partner for this weekend's NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals.

CARQUEST and Carrier Boyz Racing were paired at the Seattle event, also sponsored by CARQUEST Auto Parts. At that event, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Berryman Products/CARQUEST Top Fuel Dragster, advanced to the semifinal round.

"I found out very quickly at Seattle that the management, employees and guests associated with CARQUEST Auto Parts are great people to be around and I look forward to renewing that relationship at Chicago," said McClenathan. "CARQUEST seems to have brought us some luck in Seattle and hopefully we can do as well or better at this event."

Andy Carrier, who along with his brother Mark own Carrier Boyz Racing, added, "Mark and I look forward to carrying the CARQUEST Auto Parts banner on our dragster once again this weekend. We are proud that CARQUEST has given us the opportunity to represent them both at Seattle and now here in Chicago and look forward to discussing a continued business relationship in the future."

Entering this weekend's CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., near Chicago, Cory Mac has accumulated 975 points after 19 of 23 events on the 2004 schedule, No. 7 in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings.

"Looking at the POWERade point standings, we need to go to the later rounds and cut into the point amounts of those cars in front of us, while protecting our position from those behind us," said McClenathan. "While we want every POWERade point available to us, it's qualifying points for the Budweiser Shootout that we need. Time is running out. There are only two events left to make up the point difference between us and Doug Herbert."

In the newly established qualifying procedure for the 2004 Budweiser Shootout, only the seven Top Fuel drivers in positions 1-7 will be guaranteed a spot in the Shootout. The eighth position spot, a wild card position, will be awarded to one of the eight drivers who qualify in positions 8-15 through a special lottery drawing.

Currently, McClenathan is in the No. 8 spot with 2470 points, 45 points behind Doug Herbert in seventh. McClenathan doesn't want to be in the lottery drawing. He wants to be guaranteed a spot in the Budweiser Shootout, which will be contested at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, October 30, during the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.

The only way McClenathan can do that is to pick up enough points to overcome the deficit between him and Herbert. The four qualifying sessions are important to both drivers, since points are earned by how you qualify. The higher you qualify, the more points you earn.

McClenathan and Herbert go head-to-head for points when professional nitro qualifying begins on Friday (October 1) with two sessions scheduled for Friday at 4 and 7 p.m. and concluding with two additional sessions on Saturday (October 2) at 1 and 4 p.m. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday (October 3) at 11 a.m. These times are subject to change and reflect Central Daylight Time (CDT).

Qualifying highlights for the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday (October 2) from 4-6 p.m. ESPN2 will also air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 8 until 10 p.m. on Sunday (October 3). The elimination show repeats from 3-5 p.m. on ESPN2 on Tuesday, October 5 and Friday, October 8. Television times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and subject to change at anytime.
