Kurt Johnson Qualifies Tenth at the Carquest Nationals

On the strength of a 6.778 second, 203.95 mph pass made on his first attempt on Saturday, Kurt Johnson qualified his ACDelco Pro Stock Cavalier 10th for Sunday's final eliminations of the Carquest Auto Parts Nationals in Joliet, IL. With heavy rains canceling the first day of qualifying at Route 66 Raceway, racers had only two attempts in which to secure a position in field.

After opening with the fifth quickest pass among the 39 Pro Stock cars trying for one of the 16 spots in Sunday's starting line-up, Johnson switched engines in an attempt to better his position. Although he was able to improve his top speed to a third fastest 204.60, Johnson's 6.791-second elapsed time left his opening pass as his run of record. Even so, Johnson was pleased with the day's efforts and in particular, with the tuning information they had gathered.

"When you only have two shots to get in, it's a touch and go situation. We felt we were safely in after the first session, so we put this engine in, which has a completely different power curve. Unfortunately, we burned the clutch out of it on that last run, otherwise it would have gone well over 205 and most certainly bettered the 6.77 we ran in the early session. It definitely shows potential.

"We're happy to be in, and the information we got from today's runs should prove very valuable not only tomorrow, but in other races throughout the rest of the season. However, tomorrow is a different story. We can't go out slipping the clutch and expect to win. We'll have to get after our ACDelco Cavalier, so we'll throw some more clutch in it and go from there."
