Career Best Not Good Enough
Frustration Continues For Pawuk

JOLIET, IL 10/3/04 Despite notching his career best elapsed time with a run of 6.721 seconds, Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk's Summit Racing Pontiac failed to make the quickest Pro Stock field in history at Route 66 Raceway this past weekend. Pawuk's elapsed time was a slim .004 quicker than his previous best, which came at the K&N Filters Spring Super Nationals at Englishtown, New Jersey in 2003, and an even thinner .003 from the bump at the Carquest Nationals in Joliet. His fastest speed, 204.57 MPH, trailed his previous best of 205.13MPH, which was also recorded at Englishtown last year.

"It was obvious from the first session that this was going to be a very tough field," Pawuk said following qualifying.

"The fact that the weather pretty much cooperated for a change really helped everyone in our class, so I have no complaints other than not making the show.

"I have mixed emotions about our results. I'm pleased that we ran as hard as we did, but frustrated that it wasn't quick enough.

"We used our own powerplant this weekend, but we're continuing to search for more horsepower. There've been occasions when we've used rental engines, and that's meant a considerable extra expense in staying out here, but it's our responsibility to do the best we possibly can for our sponsors, and you can't do that while you're sitting at home.

"We'll continue to do whatever we can to be competitive, and we're certainly not losing any of our resolve. At the same time it's increasingly obvious to us that without having some of the tools we need at our disposal to become competitive it'll continue to be increasingly difficult for us to get over the hump and be a factor in these remaining few races.

"We were once again bowled over by the fan support we saw in Joliet and that, more than anything else, is what's keeping us going right now. The people have been unbelievably supportive since July, and right now that's who we want to perform for more than anything else."
