Timing works against Hammonds in Joliet on Friday.
Tom Hammonds opened his Craftsman 75th Anniversary NHRA Nationals qualifying effort on Friday afternoon with a solid 6.861-second, 200.29 mph pass, which at the time placed his Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier seventh among the forty-four Pro Stock entries.
Despite this initial success, Hammonds knew further improvement would be necessary to maintain his position in the field following the crucial evening session. However, just as Hammonds was scheduled to make his run, fellow competitor Greg Anderson suffered a dramatic accident in which his race car slid down the track on its roof.
Although Anderson fortunately escaped unscathed, the ensuing delay allowed the racing surface to cool, which resulted in less traction for those following him. Racing in the first pair after the incident, Hammonds fought to maintain control from the start, and recorded a 6.931 second elapsed time. As a result, Hammonds found himself looking towards one of Saturday's two sessions to reclaim a spot in Sunday's final eliminations.
"Our first run was exactly what we were looking for. Even though the set-up was a little soft, it gave us a good baseline to tune from, and we felt we were in a good position going into the evening session.
"Unfortunately, a few things worked against us tonight. First, Greg Anderson had the misfortune of having an accident right in front of us, and although we're relied that he's okay, the delay caused by the clean up meant that we had to run on a cold track. In addition, we were in the right lane, which is much trickier than the left. But we're not trying to blame anything or anyone. We should be able to get down both lanes.
"We will be in the left lane tomorrow morning, which should allow us to make a better run than we did tonight, and, if Mother Nature cooperates, we will step up and get our Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier back in the show."
