Jim Yates Resumes Quest for Race Win at Route 66 Raceway

JOLIET, Ill. - The most important part of a weekend off between sets of three straight NHRA races is the opportunity races teams have to restock their parts supplies.

"You go through a lot of parts during those three races," said Jim Yates, driver of the B&W/Wiley-X Eyewear Pro Stock Pontiac. "We're getting our equipment together, working on transmissions and car rear ends."

The new and rebuilt stuff will be put to the test at the CarQuest Auto Parts Nationals, Friday through Sunday at Route 66 Raceway. Following will be events at Englishtown, N.J. (June 19) and St. Louis (June 26).

"We felt our car was running good at Topeka (Kan., May 29), and track conditions at Joliet should be good, too," added Yates, who was second here in 2001. "Pro Stock is an intensely competitive class, and a lot of rounds are won at the starting line."

It happened at Topeka as Yates, who qualified sixth, lost a close race because Greg Stanfield had the quicker start. "We've won and lost a lot of rounds like that," Yates said. "I've been working on my practice 'tree at home to stay sharp."

"It's important to qualify in the top half of the field because you get lane choice in the first round," Yates noted. "We were pleased because we qualified at Topeka with our backup motor. Steve Schmidt (engine builder) is working on our race motor and he's stepped up the horsepower. That's something to look forward to."

In their October 2004 visit to Route 66 Raceway, Pro Stock drivers produced eight of the category's top 10 times of the year.

Yates is currently ninth in NHRA POWERade Series points with 412.
