JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO SEMIFINAL EFFORT AT ROUTE 66 RACEWAY; CLOCKS CAREER-BEST RUN IN QUALIFYING AT JOLIET

JOLIET, Ill. (June 11, 2006) - After racing to the quickest pass of his veteran driving career, 4.672 seconds, en route to his first No. 1 qualifying award of the season, Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Funny Car to a qu! arterfinal effort Sunday at Route 66 Raceway.

Johnson, who captured his first No. 1 qualifying award in more than five seasons by way of the third quickest pass in NHRA history, used a stout .069 of-a-second reaction time to score the wire-to-wire victory over No. 16 qualifier Tim Wilkerson. Johnson's Chevy shook the tires and slowed to a run of 5.500 seconds at 305.36 mph, but Wilkerson, also in a Chevy, lost traction earlier and coasted to a 9.573-second run.

In the second round, Johnson was pitted against defending series champion Gary Scelzi. The Iowa native blasted his Skoal Racing flopper to its second quickest pass of the weekend, 4.752 at 324.44, but by virtue of a quicker reaction time, Scelzi earned the round win with a run of 4.772 at 303.50. Johnson remains sixth in the NHRA Funny Car standings.

"We got a nice break in the first round," Johnson said. "We were just too soft. We backed it up too much for the first round and it shook the tires. We were able to pedal the car and got the win light.

"My guys did a good job of fixing the tune-up for the second round. (Gary) Scelzi was good and I was just a little off. You have to be on all the time. This class is just that competitive. Overall, it was a good weekend. We've got a really competitive car right now."
