Hungry for his first NHRA season championship Larry Dixon and Miller Lite team stay to test after gatornationals win.
GAINESVILLE, FL. (Mar. 20) - Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite/Snake Racing Top Fuel team know that even though they have clearly dominated the first three events of the young 2002 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, a lot of hard work and difficult round wins stand between them and Dixon's first world championship.
That is why on Monday - the very next day after Dixon became only the fifth Top Fuel driver in history to win back-to-back Mac Tools Gatornationals titles - crew chief Dick LaHaie ordered his troops back to Gainesville Raceway to try and learn as much as possible in an attempt to not only continue their current string of success, but to also stay a step ahead of the vicious quarter-mile competition.
In fact, after Dixon and his mates won the Gatornationals title in 2001, the team stayed over an extra day to test a new engine combination that turned out to be the same one used to put the Miller Lite Team in the Winner's Circle last Sunday. So, while other teams were sharing the testing grounds with Dixon on Monday, it is unclear as to whether they are also looking for clues for future races or simply trying to keep up with the current Top Fuel point leaders.
Regardless of what his rivals were doing, Dixon donned his fire suit and went back to work twice Monday. Keeping true to form, LaHaie did not ask his driver to make full runs for reasons of safety, but when the day was done, Dixon was pleased with the results. "I think things went pretty well for us," said Dixon. "We tested some new things and some new equipment. Whether we use the new equipment and information for our next race in Las Vegas is something that we will have to take some time to evaluate, analyze and then go from there."
With testing compete, the team packed up and plan to head home to Indianapolis for routine service and preparations for their next challenge - the Third Annual Summitracing.com Nationals (April 4-7) at Las Vegas. Dixon hopes that 2002 will bring a different result for the special edition Miller Lite/25th Anniversary Elvis Dragster this trip to the desert as he has yet to advance past the second round at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
