HOUSTON (Oct. 27) - Many things have changed since NHRA Top Fuel driver Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster last visited Houston Raceway Park in April. The O'Relly Nationals held in the Spring saw many great accomplishments for Dixon and the Miller Lite team. The Miller Lite “True To Texas†Dragster made its debut on Friday during the first day of qualifying and proceeded to set the world on fire with drag racing's first ever sub 4.5 second lap down the quarter-mile racetrack.
The 4.486 second provisional pass set during the night session of April 9 would hold on to secure the pole position for the No. 91 car and marked the second of three consecutive No. 1 qualifying efforts for the Snake Racing squad. Dixon recorded his first pole just one week earlier at Gainesville, and posted his third in the event following the Houston spring race.
One key element in the Miller Lite Team's early success was the guidance of legendary tuner Dale Armstrong. The Houston event marked just the fourth race in Armstrong's first full season as crew chief for Dixon after first joining the team over mid-way through the 1998 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.
The Miller Lite Team will have a new look this time around however as new crew chief Dick LaHaie is now calling the shots in this weekend's Third Annual Matco Tools SuperNationals (Oct. 28-31). LaHaie first joined the team at the recent NHRA event in Topeka as Armstrong moved over to Ron Capps' funny car.
The Miller Lite Dragster itself will also have a different look as the original blue and white paint scheme will be used instead of the “True To Texas†decal combination which appeared only in a special promotion scheduled for both the Houston and Dallas spring events. Another difference is that Dixon comes into the second to last race of the year ranked ninth in the points race while leaving Houston this spring in the No. 4 position.
“Like any race, I try to put all the other stuff out of my head and concentrate on winning,†says Dixon. “We still have our goal of finishing in the Top 5 in the NHRA Winston point standings, and being only four rounds out, I think we still have a pretty good chance of reaching that goal.â€
