Traction Trouble Strikes David Baca at Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS - After overcoming mechanical problems that occurred during Friday and Saturday qualifying sessions, David Baca and the Baca Motorsports team couldn't get past the first round of Sunday's Summitracing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Baca held an early lead in the quarter-mile run before the tires began to spin and smoke, something that has been an unwanted first-round companion. The result was Baca's dragster slowed to 6.789 seconds at 124.22 mph and Doug Herbert drove away with the win in 4.679 at 323.12 mph.
"That was very disappointing," said Baca. "We've been having problems in the bell housing and we need to find out what's wrong with it. This is getting very frustrating."
A broken brass fitting triggered a fire and engine explosion that turned pistons and connecting rods into piles of fishing weights came in the middle of Baca's Friday night qualifying session. His 4.662 time at 300.40 mph was enough to put him into the starting line-up despite the fact the engine really quit at midtrack.
On Friday, a mechanical gremlin struck as the team prepared for the last qualifying run. Co-tuners Dennis Baca, David's father, and Larry Meyer, along with crew chief Kevin Poynter, decided not to make the attempt.
Next up is the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol, Tenn.
