Herbert and Snap-on take a round victory in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools dragster earned a round win during Sunday's NHRA POWERade event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

He was looking to win three more, but in some ways, Herbert won more than one round this weekend. Herbert beat first-round opponent David Baca, blazing a 4.679-second pass at 323.12 mph to Baca's 6.789 run at 124.22. The team also learned a lot about making the Snap-on Tools dragster go quickly down a track that soared beyond the 100-degree mark.

"It was a great way to start the day," Herbert said about the first round victory. "(Wife) Sonnie won some money gambling on Saturday night and we were hoping we were going to win all day Sunday. We didn't, but at least we got one round victory. Now we need to get after it and win four straight in one day.

"This weekend was still good for us because we made a couple of good passes on a hot track and that is something we hadn't done yet. That is crucial if we want to win races between now and fall."

Herbert came up short in the second round matchup to Tony Schumacher, turning in a 4.695 run at 311.34 to Schumacher's 4.590 at 325.69.

"We need to be able to beat that guy," Herbert said about the points leader. "We qualified well, but we need to step on it and make this Snap-on dragster quicker on Sundays. We can't keep running in the 4.60s and be competitive and win four rounds.

"We're making progress every weekend and we are moving in the right direction all the time. There are just a few adjustments that need to be made and we will win more rounds."

The team has opted to stay in Las Vegas and test on Monday to ensure that they are prepared for the next NHRA event. The next NHRA POWERade event is the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Ten., April 29 -- May 1. That race is just outside Herbert's home near Charlotte.

"We are going to test to pick up some performance," Herbert said. "We made full passes down the track, but they need to be quicker and testing will help us figure out what needs to change. I can't wait to get to Bristol. We won there so many times early in my career and I want to make sure we're ready to win there again.

"I know this team is capable of great things and it is just a matter of time before we meet our potential. We're working real hard to get it done."
