Densham ready for four round wins in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS -- Gary Densham is happy and sad at the same time right now. As a veteran Funny Car driver, Densham is thrilled the Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo team qualified for the final elimination rounds at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
As a team owner, however, Densham was not too happy. The team hurt some parts during the final qualifying session Saturday and he doesn't know why. Still Densham posted a 4.958-second pass at 291.76 mph to take the No. 13 spot in qualifying.
"We broke a rod for what seems like no reason at all," Densham, the 2002 Las Vegas event winner, said. "But the good news is that we are starting to make the clutch work during hot and cold conditions. We still need more runs because we aren't completely right just yet but every time we make a pass, it gets better."
Densham will face Robert Hight in the first round. Hight, the newest Force Racing driver, is driving for the team Densham had for four years -- the Automobile Club of Southern California Ford Mustang. The Auto Club still has a sponsorship relationship with Densham. Hight qualified in the No. 4 position.
"It's going to be fun and exciting racing Robert," Densham said. "He's a fellow teammate so to speak and we're going to go out there and see what we can do. I think it will be a great race."
The rookie knows anything can happen, regardless of the qualifying positions.
"I'm actually a little nervous because I know how good he is but I am still excited about it," Hight said. "Densham taught me a lot and I know he didn't teach me everything he knows. I wish we were racing in the final round rather than the first round."
Densham is a team owner and a driver. But he is also a competitor with a new product to show off. The first NHRA Racebrick has been made and Densham is ready to sell, sell, sell.
"I remember when they first showed me a diecast years ago," Densham said. "I thought it was a neat little toy. Then I got my first royalty check and it was the biggest check I'd ever seen in my life with my name written on it.
"Now we have these Racebricks and to me, these are the new diecasts. People love them and the fact all the sales goes back to the Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo makes me even more excited."
Final eliminations start at 11 a.m. and can be seen on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. (ET).
