Herbert starts no. 1; goes to semifinals in Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, October 27, 2002 - Doug Herbert qualified No. 1 for the second time in the last three races and pulled closer to Cory McClenathan in his quest for sixth place, but he didn't get to the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals finals Sunday like he wanted.

"I think the track might've gone away a bit," said Herbert following his semifinal finish against Tony Schumacher at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  The tires on the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster began spinning as it approached the finish line and Schumacher won with a 4.641 at 317.94 mph to 5.185 at 213.30 mph.

"We needed to make up some ground on McClenathan," he added, "but we'll really have our work cut out for us when we get to Pomona (Calif. in the NHRA POWERade Series finale, Nov. 7-10)." Herbert, who has never finished higher than seventh in series points, is 50 behind McClenathan, 1310-1260.

McClenathan left the door open for Herbert when he was upended in the first round Sunday.

"We have a good car, one of the fastest out there now, and we'd like to parlay that into another race win," Herbert continued.  "It wasn't a bad weekend, but it wasn't exactly what we wanted."

Herbert, who claimed his first low qualifying berth two races ago in Joliet, Ill., captured his second with a 4.537 at 301.13 mph.  And the run could've been better but the supercharger exploded about 300 feet before the finish line.

Herbert defeated Mike Strasburg and Darrell Russell before squaring off against Schumacher, who lost to Larry Dixon in the finals.  Dixon also clinched his first Top Fuel championship while winning his ninth race of the season.

Qualified: No. 1, 4.537 seconds at 301.13 mph; First round: Herbert, 4.621 at 317.94 def. Mike Strasburg;  Quarterfinals: Herbert, 4.6156 at 293.98 def. Darrell Russell;  Semifinals: Tony Schumacher def. Herbert.

Pro Winners: Larry Dixon, Top Fuel; John Force, Funny Car; Jeg Coughlin Jr., Pro Stock
