Herbert'S 4.537-second run puts him atop AcDelco Las Vegas field.
LAS VEGAS -- It took Doug Herbert a long time to qualify No. 1 at an NHRA national event. That came in his 191st Top Fuel event -- two races ago. And Saturday he was the quickest again at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Herbert's Snap-on dragster stopped the clocks at 4.537 seconds, 301.13 mph -- and it could've been much better -- in Saturday night's final qualifying session for Sunday's ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals. The engine expired with a resounding boom about 300 feet before the finish line.
"The motor didn't lay over or give any warning that it was going to blow up," said Herbert. "I wish it would've lasted just a little bit longer. If it had, we might've run a 4.48. It was running 278 mph at half track."
Herbert had been in second place prior to that run. He went 4.573 at 322.34 mph Friday evening.
"The car is so smoothe when it runs like that you don't even realize how quick it's going," added Herbert. "I shut it off Friday night because I didn't think it was going good, but the numbers said it was. Wes Cerny has been tuning the car in the last three races and that's made the difference."
In his last three outings, Herbert has been No. 1 twice -- his first coming at Joliet, Ill., Sept. 29 -- and second once, at Ennis, Texas, two weeks ago. Included was his quickest elapsed time, 4.518 seconds, at Joliet.
Herbert races Mike Strasburg, the No. 16 qualifier at 4.719 seconds, 306.81 mph.
