Anderson Wins In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Greg Anderson, driver of the Vegas General Construction Pontiac Grand Am, will start today's third annual AC Delco Las Vegas Nationals from the pole position. In the last session of qualifying Anderson drove his Pontiac to a 6.866 / 200.44 mph to earn his thirteenth Pro Stock Number 1 qualifier of the 2003 season.

In the first round of eliminations, Anderson faced Number 16 qualifier Mike Corvo. When the lights went green, Anderson was out in front and stayed there to take the win. Anderson ran a 6.852 / 201.52 mph to defeat Corvo who ran a 6.906 / 200.05 mph.

Round 2 placed Anderson across from Ron Krisher. Anderson took the advantage on the starting and maintained his lead to the finish line. Anderson ran a 6.881 / 200.74 mph to Krisher's 6.920 / 199.29 mph.

Semi-finals found Anderson racing Jeg Coughlin Jr. At the hit of the throttle, Coughlin took a big lead with a .008 of a second light, but it would not be enough to hold off the KB Racing horsepower. Anderson caught Coughlin at about 300 feet down track and powered his way to the finish line. Anderson ran a 6.860 / 200.31 mph to defeat Coughlin with a 6.916 / 199.32 mph

The final round placed Anderson opposite Kurt Johnson. Johnson had the advantage at the starting line with a light of .035 of a second to Anderson's light of .069 of a second, his advantage would not hold, as Anderson caught him at the finish line to take the win by a margin of victory of .0077 of a second. Anderson ran a 6.837 / 201.73 mph to defeat Johnson with a 6.878 / 200.56 mph.

This eleventh win ties Darrell Alderman's record for the most Pro Stock victories in one season. By going to his fourteenth final round this season Anderson also ties Jeg Coughlin and Darrell Alderman's' record for the most final round appearances in one season. The record for the most Pro Stock round wins in one season previously was 62 held by both Coughlin and Alderman. With this win, Anderson now holds the record at 63 wins.

"This is wonderful," said Anderson of Charlotte, NC. "This ride just gets better and better. It is unbelievable the things that this Vegas General Construction has accomplished this season.

"Today we tied Alderman's win record, and broke the round record. I do not think there was anyone at the beginning of the year who thought we could be as good as we have been. It is a true tribute to how good this team Vegas General Construction team is."

"I feel very fortunate to be standing here in this winner's circle today. When you consider that we did not even qualify at this race last year. The fact that we could come back here and sweep both races is phenomenal. Today it is good to be Greg Anderson."

"Of course I could not have been able to accomplish any of these things if it where not for the support I receive from Ken Black and his family. I could never thank them enough for making my dreams come true, but I come close when I can win in their hometown. Not just win, but to sweep both races. This win is for Ken Black, Judy Black, Ken Black Jr. and all the employees of Vegas General Construction. This win is for them."

The next race on the 2002 POWERade Drag Racing series will be the 38th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif. November 7-10.
