KJ's Opening Hand in Las Vegas Places him Eighth

One day after unveiling his dramatic new Hulkamania paint scheme at the NHRA FanFest, ACDelco Cobalt racer Kurt Johnson looked to muscle his way down the track during the first day of qualifying for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals in Las Vegas, NV. After opening with a 6.847-second, 202.82 mph pass, he came back in the late afternoon with a 6.781-second, 203.28 mph run, slotting him in the eighth position midway through qualifying, with his sights set on improving even further on Saturday.

"The Hulkamania Cobalt is just showing a little muscle at a time -- after all, we don't want to show our hand all at once! Seriously, we had to tune on our Hulkamania/ACDelco Cobalt today. We didn't know what the track was going to give us this morning and it was actually a little better than we thought it would be, and had a little too much bite in it. As a result, we ended up making a bad run.

"We came back and made some changes for the second run, picking up six hundredths to the eighth mile, which showed up on the scoreboard, moving us from fourteenth to eighth. We'll just keep fine tuning it tomorrow, trying to pick it up even further. We know we can pick up a couple hundredths to the eighth, which will put us up in the thick of the higher-qualified cars. We just have to keep working on it."
