Capps Finishes Seventh Friday at Vegas After 4.820 Pass

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 29, 2004) - Ron Capps powered his green Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo solidly into the field at the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after stopping the clocks in 4.820 seconds at 318.39 mph.

After Capps' Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper overpowered the Las Vegas Motor Speedway quarter mile on its opening pass of the weekend, the 14-time NHRA winner blasted to the 4.820, 318.39 effort to claim the No. 7 qualifying position using a tune-up from co-crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler. There are 24 cars attempting to make the cut for Sunday's 16-car field.

"We're running a new tire, which we feel is a better tire, and it grabbed the track a little more than we thought it would on the first pass and through off the clutch setup," Capps said. "Todd (Okuhara) and Phil (Shuler) did a great job of making adjustments to the tire and the weather conditions for the second pass. We expected to run a low 4.80, and it did. I'm real happy with the green Skoal Racing guys."

Capps aims to move further into the top half of the Funny Car ladder when Funny Car qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for 12:30 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Capps won the inaugural ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals in 2001.
