Johnson Jr. Posts First-Round Finish at Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. and the blue Skoal RacingSM crew held their ground in the NHRA Funny Car standings Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The five-time NHRA winner used a starting line advantage to take the early lead over first-round opponent Gary Scelzi, before Scelzi's Funny Car powered by at the top end of the race course to collect the round win. Johnson's Chevy flopper stopped the timers in 4.888 seconds at 317.42 mph and Scelzi used a pass of 4.809 at 319.75 to score the win light in his lane. Johnson and the blue Skoal Racing car remain 11th in the NHRA points standings.
"We struggled in qualifying this weekend and that got us behind the eight ball," Johnson said. "We just didn't have a good baseline from qualifying and we got outrun by a good team."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 40th annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals, Nov. 11-14, at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
