Jeff Arend and the DHL Funny Car team ready for bustling and hustling race weekend in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, (April 1, 2009) -- Jeff Arend, driver of the bright yellow, 8,000-horsepower DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car, and his DHL team, led by co-crew chiefs Jon Oberhofer and Nick Boninfante, are hoping to continue their steady ascension to winning consistency this weekend, April 2-5, at the annual running of the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"Our DHL car is steadily improving in all areas every time we get out on the track," Arend, a 46-year old resident of San Dimas, Calif., said. "We just keep chipping away at it and we are seeing clearer now the little things we have to adjust to make our car be consistently at the top of the performance charts. Everyone on our DHL team works very hard and I couldn't have a more dedicated team around me.

"I've got a really good feeling that we're going to get our first round-wins of the year this weekend in [Las] Vegas. I'm sure we've got some pretty long odds of winning according to the so-called experts, but we sure hope we can prove them wrong with a win this weekend."

Arend joined Kalitta Motorsports in 2008 to assume the driving duties of the DHL entry after the tragic death of Scott Kalitta as the result of injuries he suffered in a high-speed racing accident in June in New Jersey. Arend is a 14-year Funny Car veteran with one NHRA Funny Car national event win to his credit -- Reading, Pa., 1996. He is married to Windy, and they have a daughter, Jenna, 9.

Arend will kick off the weekend's activities by competing in another sport that is centered around lanes. Thursday, April 2, Arend and other NHRA competitors will participate in the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas. Arend, a former league bowler in his native Canada, is still a very avid bowler with a reputable 170 average. He will be teamed with NHRA Funny Car drivers Robert Hight, Del Worsham, Jack Beckman, and Matt Hagan to comprise the "NHRA Floppers" team.

Thursday night, Arend and many other NHRA drivers will take part in a free autograph session in the Key West Room of the Palms Casino Resort from 6 to 8 p.m.
