Top Fuel Points leader Larry Dixon is low qualifier after first day at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
LAS VEGAS (April 5) - NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points leader Larry Dixon began this weekend's race with the same consistency and momentum he has had all season as he used a lap of 4.575 seconds (325.37 mph) in the Miller Lite/Elvis Presley Tribute Dragster to take the low qualifier position Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Dixon started his campaign for his first career win at The Strip with a pass of 4.637 seconds (325.37 mph) and earned the No. 1 qualifying position after the day's opening session. Several hours later, cool night air allowed Crew Chief Dick LaHaie the opportunity to turn up the wick and go for a big number. Dixon's 4.575-second run - the only 4.5-second clocking among the 22 Top Fuel cars - kept the Miller Lite/MAC Tools ride on top of the qualifying ladder.
"I give all the credit to LaHaie for the consistency of the car," said Dixon. "Whether we are the quickest car or the slowest, being consistent is something that he works very hard at. He made some adjustments for the night session and the conditions of the track helped us as the track cooled down. I am really glad it cooled down because I think that helped all of the cars. The track is real smooth after they ground it down, getting rid of the bumps that used to be there because of the (pedestrian) tunnel underneath. The NHRA's preparation guys did a great job with the track and it made a big difference."
Should Dixon hold on and remain the "pole" winner, it would be his third of the season and second time he has been the No. 1 qualifier at The Strip. If he were fortunate enough to win the race on Sunday, it would mark the first time Dixon has advanced past the second round of eliminations at the desert track.
Two qualifying sessions remain on Saturday (11:30 & 3:00 PM PT) while Sunday's elimination round is scheduled for an 11 AM PT start.
