The Dixon Dispatch
Weekly Release of 2002 NHRA POWERade Champ Larry Dixon & Miller Lite Dragster
NHRA Top Fuel Champ Larry Dixon & Miller Lite Dragster aim for title defense after sweeping The Strip in 2002 to become kings of the desert.
LAS VEGAS (April 2) - Las Vegas may be known as the Disneyland for adults, but this weekend it's all work and no play for Larry Dixon and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite Top Fuel Team during the Fourth Annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals (April 3-6) at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Having swept both national events last season at The Strip, reigning NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champ Dixon and the Miller Lite Team would like nothing more than to make it three in a row with a win this weekend.
"I am looking forward to returning to Las Vegas," said Dixon. "I have some great memories here from last year where we swept both events and eventually clinched the championship," said Dixon. "It seems like every time we come to the desert we've done extremely well."
In fact, Dixon and the Miller Lite team have done extremely well thus far in the young 2003 season, starting with his incredible performance at Pomona to kick off his 2002 NHRA POWERade championship title defense.
Dixon made history that weekend as he went on to capture both the race victory and the $100,000 Top Fuel Shootout, en route to a near $200,000 pay day.
But don't expect to see him spending that money at the tables this weekend. "It might be Las Vegas where everyone is gambling and partying, but I'll be in my motor home camped out," said Dixon.
"I'm here to race. Between the time when I get into town, up until the time the race is over, it's all business for me."
While The Strip can be known as a difficult track to tame due to a higher elevation than most other NHRA surfaces, Dixon and crew chief Dick LaHaie believe that elevation won't be that big of an issue.
"Readjusting for the desert air and the altitude can be challenging at times," admits Dixon. "You can learn to make power with the cars, but you can't give them anymore down force. It's a tricky thing, but I am sure that LaHaie and the guys on the Miller Lite team will have a handle on things."
In a city known for its concerts, nightlife and heavyweight boxing matches, Las Vegas has a lot to offer. But on this particular weekend look for NHRA POWERade Drag Racing to steal the spotlight and for Larry Dixon to take his best shot at defending his title as "King of the Desert."
