Larry Nance: Driver and Team Owner

Larry Nance still confident as NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals approach.
LAS VEGAS - - As quick as you can say "Larry Nance," is how much quicker the Akron, Ohio, driver of the Marine Corps Pro Stock Olds needs to go to make the field at this weekend's NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
"For the third race in a row the Marine Corps Pro Stock Olds didn't qualify. While I continue to be upset that we haven't qualified, I am not discouraged. We are about as close as you can get to the top 16 and not qualify. That gives me confidence as we approach Vegas," said Larry Nance, the former NBA all-star turned Pro Stock drag racer.
"I've never raced in Vegas, but both my engine builder, Richard Maskin, and my crew chief, Taylor Lastor, have. I'll rely on their experience plus what we've learned last race. We'll take all that to Vegas and try to get into the show."
Nance takes not qualifying as part of his learning experience. "I know how tough Pro Stock racing is. It takes time to gel. We haven't had enough time to test and know this car and motor combination well. It's very disappointing, but it doesn't discourage me from wanting to race Pro Stock. That's what I want to do; that's what I'm going to do. Not qualifying isn't going to chase me away. The Marine Corps is 100 percent behind me and the fans continue to give their support. That's what its all about," reflected Nance.
"To support our program we have an ongoing search for associate marketing partners to supplement the Marine Corps program. It takes capital to race. That's spelled M-O-N-E-Y. To make us more competitive, we've gone ahead and ordered a new Jerry Bickel-built Cavalier. We're really excited about that! It should be here sometime in May. We'll do whatever it takes to be competitive. I'm here for the long haul, but right now I guess I'm going through the proverbial 'learning curve.'"
As part of his marketing partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps, Nance is visiting a Las Vegas area school, Sierra Vista High School, where he will discuss leadership qualities to resist negative peer pressure, hold one-on-one basketball games with students and sign autographs.
"Las Vegas is a beautiful town. I look forward to talking with the
students. It's all a great experience.
"As to the race, anytime I'm racing I'm excited. I'm kind of tired of saying that I'm going to qualify at the next race, so let me just say that I feel are chances are real good. We'll give it our best effort and see what happens," concluded Nance.
