White going for Division Championship in Vegas
LAS VEGAS - After a long, hard year of fighting it out on the NHRA divisional level, it all comes down to the last race of the year for Federal Mogul Funny Car driver Marc White and the Etterman Racing team. Coming into this weekend's final NHRA Division 7 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series meet at "The Strip" in Las Vegas, Marc White is currently second in Division 3 Federal Mogul Funny Car points, but can clinch the Championship by making it to the finals this weekend.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., realizes the challenge ahead of him this weekend. Not that any division is easy, but Division 7 is surely one of the tougher divisions to compete in on the Federal Mogul Funny Car level. Division 7 also features a different format from the format he is accustomed to in Division 3. Instead of three qualifying sessions, there is only two, and it is a 16 car field in Division 7, rather than an eight car field. Throw in the fact that the team has never competed in the altitude of Las Vegas, so it is clear that the team may have their work cut out for them.
Nevertheless, White and the team still have an aggressive attitude. White feels they was not aggressive enough at their last race, the O'Reilly Fall Nationals in Dallas, when they lost in the second round. White has stated if they lose this weekend, it won't be because they wasn't aggressive enough.
"We definitely need to be more aggressive than we have been," said White. "The fact that Vegas is at about 2000 ft. of actual altitude is going to throw us a little bit of a curve ball. Also, this is Division 7, it's a 16 car show, and a lot of people stayed over from the national there last weekend, so this is basically going to be a national event. It is going to be very tough to get to the final for whoever gets there, but we'll give it our best."
Class front-runners Jay Payne and Pat Austin ran low 5.7 second clockings there last weekend for the AC Delco Nationals. White feels it will take much the same this weekend.
"I assume that's [5.70's] what it's going to take to win this weekend," commented White. "I'm sure the track is going to be in excellent condition, just coming off a national event. Payne is going to be there, and he did pretty well the last time they ran in Vegas, so he will be somebody we will have to deal with."
Qualifying begins today at 3 p.m., with one final qualifying session Saturday morning. First round eliminations will be ran Saturday afternoon, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for the latest Federal Mogul racing news.
