Martino slots an impressive 3rd for Vegas eliminations

Date: Saturday, April 6, 2002
Location: The Strip at La Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV

On the strength of a 6.964 second, 197.77 mph run made during Friday's evening session, Tom Martino qualified his Jesel Motorsports Grand Am 3rd for Sunday's final eliminations of the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, NV. Although warmer temperatures On Saturday prevented the normally-aspirated Pro Stockers from matching the previous day's performances, at the conclusion of qualifying the Martino entry was among the quickest on three of four attempts.

Martino's 3rd place effort marks his best qualifying performance since the 2000 Winternationals in Pomona, CA where he also captured the No. 3 position. Martino's first-round opponent will be No. 14 qualifier Darrell Alderman.

"Overall, we're pretty satisfied with our Jesel Motorsports Grand Am. After two good runs on Friday, we tried something this morning that the car really didn't like. Fortunately, we were able to come back on our last attempt and make a pretty respectable pass. I think we have a pretty good handle on it for tomorrow. Darrell's been running well, so we'll need to be on it right from the start.

"Qualifying third is great, but we've only cleared the first hurdle. We need to follow it up with an equally strong performance in eliminations tomorrow, going as many rounds as we can and hopefully putting ourselves in a position to win. To do that, driver, car and crew will need to do their jobs.We know we're capable, now it's up to us to get it done. "
