Although he made improvements in the first session today, Team Haas driver Charlie Greco, of St. Davids, Penn., missed the qualified field of 16.
"Our goal is always to get both Team Haas trucks qualified," said Jerry Haas, teamowner, from Fenton, Mo. "On Greco's truck we just missed by just a little bit. But as they say, 'Close, but no cigar.' We are pleased that we made significant improvement in the first round today and will try to build on what we did on the track."
"On my first run today, my Chevy S-10 ran straight as a string. The second pass was straight, also. We made a little change prior to the first session in the back that helped. Our 60-foot times are still not where they need to be and that's slowing down our times and speed. We're killing ourselves on the low end of the track and with this truck racing being as close as it is, you can't afford to give away anything," reflected Greco on his two passes today.
"I want to qualify everywhere we go. I want to win rounds everywhere we go. But if I don't get in due to weather or some other factor, then so be it. I'll be here to cheer on my teammate Matt Rhoades all day tomorrow," concluded Greco.
Matt Rhoades looses rookie stripes, qualifies 16th
Qualifying Session 1: 7.828 seconds @ 169.38 mph (#23) Qualifying Session 2: 7.665 seconds @ 176.93 mph (#10) Qualifying Session 3: 7.660 seconds @ 176.51 mph (#14) Qualifying Session 4: 7.889 seconds @ 150.72 mph (#16)
Las Vegas - - Rain and wind hampered the final two qualifying session for the NHRA Summit Racing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but rookie driver Matt Rhoades, from nearby Lake Havasu City, Ariz., was probably the happiest driver at the track.
In the opening session today, he raced his Jerry Haas-prepared Chevy S-10 down the quarter-mile in 7.660 seconds at 176.51 mph, eventually qualifying him in the 16th and final qualifying position. This meant that Rhoades qualified for his first ever professional event - - loosing his rookie stripes.
"Today we had a good run in the right lane on that first pass. There is a slight bump near half track and for a new driver it can be tricky. Fortunately, we got by that smoothly," said Rhoades, who calls The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway his home track.
The final qualifying session was of no help to Rhoades. Running under the lights, Rhoades got out of the main groove. After scrubbing off both time and speed, Rhoades abandon the pass.
"Matt (Rhoades) will probably be in the right lane in the first round of eliminations tomorrow. Unfortunately, the left lane is a couple of hundredth quicker. Last night you saw (Bob) Panella run a 7.59 (second) in the left lane and (Greg) Stanfield run 7.62 in the right. Today with lanes reversed, Stanfield ran a 7.59 (second) pass and Panella ran a (7.) 63. So lane choice will be a factor tomorrow," said Rhoades' team owner Jerry Haas.
"I'm really excited to be racing tomorrow, especially in front of family, relatives and friends who are here this weekend to see me compete," added Rhoades.
Rhoades will be squared off against #1 qualifier Greg Stanfield, from Bossier City, La., in the opening round of eliminations, which begins at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Stanfield recorded a pass of 7.595 seconds at 178.47 mph to take the top spot.
"I look forward to racing a quality competitor like Greg Stanfield in my first professional event. No matter the outcome, it will be a race I will always remember," said Rhoades.
