The Professors Slots Himself Sixth in Las Vegas

On the strength of a 6.728-second, 206.07 mph pass recorded on his second attempt on Friday, Warren Johnson qualified his GM Performance Parts Pontiac GXP in the sixth position for Sunday's final eliminations of the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, NV. As the first race with his new race car on a hot racetrack, Johnson used all four attempts at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as high-speed test sessions, gathering valuable tuning data that he will look to use on race day.

Despite having his final attempt cut short by an unusual mechanical failure, Johnson was cautiously optimistic about his chances of scoring his first win in the Nevada desert.

"We were on a pretty good pass in that final session when we broke a slider in the transmission as soon as I put it in fourth gear. It's unfortunate, because the incremental times show that we probably would have been the quickest in that lane, perhaps as good as a 6.73. It's a rare failure, but just one of those things, and I'd rather have it happen today than during eliminations tomorrow.

"Still, we've found some things out over the last two days that we believe will help us tomorrow. Overall, I'd have to say our GM Performance Parts GXP is in pretty good shape for tomorrow.

"The track isn't too bad, including the right lane. Yes, there's a slight difference between the two lanes, but it's not catastrophic. Basically, if you can learn how to negotiate it, you can get right down either side. Fortunately, we have lane choice for the first round, so we'll make the most of what's available and take it from there."
