Callaway gearing for breakout year in 2002

BAYTOWN, Texas - After competing in NHRA's Top Alcohol Dragster class for 11 years, Lee Callaway is shooting for a breakout year this season. With veteran tuner Ora Vasquez back on board, an updated Chuck Haase' chassis, and new parts, Callaway and team are looking to make a serious impact.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, is confident of his team's chances after a season-ending semifinal finish at the O'Reilly Fall Nationals in Dallas. Although that was the team's only success since Vasquez joined the team in August, Callaway cites that many bugs and problems were eliminated from the car during that span. With the year's prospects looking bright, Callaway has his eye set on a strong national and divisional finish.

"We want to finish in the top three in Division 4," Callaway said. "Our ultimate goal is to win the Division Championship. We want to try to get a top 15 finish in the nation; we feel that the pieces are in place finally to accomplish those goals. Ora [Vasquez] is really one of the great tuners in alcohol racing and I believe he can take us to the next level."

Over the offseason, Callaway has revamped his entire operation. A major part of that was having chassis builder Chuck Haase' update and front half the car. The team has also built an arsenal of the newest, state of the art parts and technology to put Callaway with the front runners of the class. In addition to making mechanical changes to the car, Callaway will also sport a trick new paint scheme designed by up and coming motorsport artist Rod Burke.

"We've made a lot of updates," commented Callaway. "This will be the first time I will have all of the newest parts, so I'm pretty excited about that. Chuck [Haase'] really did some nice work with the car. In addition to front halving the car, he built a really nice looking body and one piece carbon fiber front wing that will look trick. Rod Burke designed our new paint scheme, and are really pleased with the job he did on that; the car is going to look good."

Callaway plans to make his season debut at the Division 4 opener at his home track of Houston Raceway Park, Mar. 1-3.
