Callaway set for championship showdown

NOBLE, Okla. - It all comes down to this race, again. Once again, it is the final race of the NHRA Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Thunder Valley Raceway Park just outside of Oklahoma City, Okla., and the Top Alcohol Dragster Championship is on the line. Once again, the players are Lee Callaway and Shelly Howard. Callaway holds a slim lead going into the event, and hopes to use pre-race testing to give him the advantage.

Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, leads by a mere two points over Howard, essentially setting up a scenario where whoever goes the most rounds wins the championship. That is why Callaway is keen on his team's preparation for this event.

"It all comes down to this race, and we have gone over everything to be ready for it," said Callaway. "We're going up there Thursday to test so we can get a running start on the race. I've said a few times this year that you have to break a few eggs to make a cake; well, we've broke our eggs, and its time to make the cake. It's going to be a tough race, so we're going to have to be on our toes."

Despite killing a motor at his last race at No Problem Raceway just outside of New Orleans, Callaway still feels valuable information was learned.

"We tried a few things down there, and the car really seemed to respond," explained Callaway. "Unfortunately, in the second round it pulled a wrist pin out of a piston and pretty much grenaded the motor. Hopefully with our testing, we can expand on what we learned there and step it up a notch."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
