HOUSTON, Texas - Brian "Lump" Self, driver of the Lump Cylinder Head / NRC Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, will have to wait patiently for the start of the 2001 NHRA Drag racing season. The season gets under way on Feb. 1-4 in Pomona, Calif. with the running of the 41st Annual AutoZone WinterNationals, and it could not come sooner for Lump and his team.
"Boy, I can't wait to start racing again," said Self of Houston, Texas. "We have been working our tails off getting ready for the WinterNationals, now I just want to get to California and race."
During the off-season many competitors of the Pro Stock Truck class have spent many hours testing and tuning their trucks at racetracks throughout the country. This is not the case with Lump.
Lump has always been known for being unconventional, from his name to the way he races his truck. So, when Lump chose not to drive at the scheduled test sessions no one was surprised. Instead, he spent the winter at his shop working on horsepower. Lump kept a close eye on what the competition was doing, but waited until the last test session, the Super Bowl Warm-up in Houston, to test.
"I can't wait to get back in the truck," said Lump. "I have been to the racetrack a couple times this winter to help other guys test, but have yet to get behind the wheel. This weekend at the warm-up will be the first time I have been in the driver's seat since Pomona in November.
"I have been to a couple test sessions. One in Houston and one in Bradenton, Fla. and let me tell you there are some guys out there that have really picked up and are flying.
"We know that in this class testing is important, but the last two years we have tested our brains out and then fell flat on our faces in Pomona. We looked like heroes in testing, and zeros at the racetrack.
"This year we are going about it a little different. We will not know what the track is like in Pomona is like until we get there. The track is always good, but it can be very dry there. So, testing in Houston and Florida where the humidity is so much higher, I think, is a waste of time. This is drag racing, and drag racing is all about horsepower. So, we spent all winter in the dyno room working on horsepower.
"Pomona is going to be lightening fast, and if the dyno don't lie, we are making some pretty good smoke. When we get to California we will look at the track and the conditions we have, and tune the truck from there. That's our plan for Pomona.
"We want to go to Pomona and run good. We want to qualify well and go a couple rounds. Maybe if we run good someone will pay some attention to us and maybe a sponsor will come our way.
"We are starting the season out without a sponsor. Well really, I guess Lump Cylinder Heads is our sponsor, but I don't know how long that will last. It is an expensive proposition to run one of these trucks for the full season. I just don't see how I can do it out of my own pocket for too long.
"Hopefully we can go to Pomona, get in the show and make a little noise. We have the horsepower, and I am ready to rip them up on the tree. I have a good team backing me up in the pits, so I think we will be all right at the WinterNationals.
"I've heard the ground shakes in California, but I am going to go out to Pomona and see if I can do a little ground shaking of my own."
Look for Brian "Lump" Self and his Lump Cylinder Head Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck when the 2001 NHRA Drag Racing season starts with the running of the 41st Annual AutoZone WinterNationals in Pomona, Calif. February 1-4.
